Your Intro to the Wide World of Roses

Choose a Place to Plant

There are a few important things to take into consideration when deciding on a location around your mobile home to plant your flowers. Here are our top suggestions.

  • Sunlight – Roses need at least 6 hours of sunlight per day. If you live in a climate where harsh sun is an issue, go ahead and plant your flowers in partial shade. However, you still want them to receive the morning sun.
  • Soil – Most roses can do well in almost any kind of soil, but you should still put down the usual organic matter. This goes double if you have rocky, sandy, or clay type soils. The most important thing is to remember to fertilize your flowers. If you want optimal blooms, the pH should be at a level between 5 and 7.
  • Drainage – It’s impossible to talk about soil without mentioning drainage. While it is true that roses like deep watering, their roots do not like to sit in water. If they do, they will rot and kill the gorgeous plant. Additionally, planting next to bushes or trees will make the rose compete for precious water and nutrients. So don’t do it!
  • Airflow – Although it may seem strange, airflow is important for the health of these flowers. If you crowd them, they will be more likely to suffer from insect infestations and fungal disease. Black spot and powdery mildew are 2 of the worst offenders.

Choose Your Varieties

Roses are by far some of the most popular flowers in the world. So, it should come as no surprise that there are so many different varieties! The following are some of the most purchased and planted types.

  • Hybrid Tea – Chances are, you have seen many of this kind. These are the roses that grow as a bush, and only produce 1 flower per stem. Hybrid tea roses are the type most often sold at flower shops and seen in floral arrangements.
  • Floribunda – If you are looking for roses that produce multiple blooms per stem, check out this variety! Floribundas grow on bushes, and look fantastic planted in a row.
  • Grandiflora – Half floribunda and half hybrid tea, the grandiflora is a great choice for new gardeners. It grows to be around 6 feet tall and produces blooms similar to the hybrid tea.
  • Climbers – If you want a gorgeous flower that can grow up your trellis or fence, check out climbing roses. They produce tons of flowers and will literally cling onto anything you plant them beside.
  • Landscape Roses – These roses come in shrub shapes and are perfect to fill in any landscaping gaps. They grow closer to the ground than any we have reviewed so far, and they aren’t quite as needy as the other roses. As a bonus, they are resistant to disease!
  • Tree Roses – These may be the most beautiful roses around. However, it takes a lot to keep the tree form alive and well. Since they are hybrids resulting from grafting they aren’t as hardy as some other forms. Winter can be especially difficult.

  • Miniatures – All the kids I know also affectionately refer these to as “cute roses”! Mini roses are named after the fact that they are the smallest rose plants you can purchase. They can be as small as half a foot, or as tall as 2 feet. Use these plants for boarders, pots, and tiny spaces.

Bare Root Roses

Bare root roses are just like they sound: there are no flowers and instead you literally get bare roots. They grow faster than container roses, and you should plant them between 6 weeks before and 2 weeks after your location’s last frost. Here’s how to plant roses that are of the bare root variety:

  1. Dig a hole – Make sure it is larger than the plants, and deeper than the roots. Keep roses between 2 and 3 feet apart, because the roots can grow quite large.
  1. Plant the roots – In a warm region, make sure the bud union is right above ground level. In a cold climate, the bud union should be 1 to 2 inches below the ground for protection.
  1. Fill in the hole – Pat the soil down firmly around the roots until the hole is 75% full.
  1. Water the roots – Do this twice, giving the first round of water time to sink in before re-watering.
  2. Trim the rose canes – You want the branches to be around 8 inches high when you are finished. Don’t forget to cut at an angle!
  1. Add more soil – Not only are you adding more soil, you are making a 6-inch mound. This is purely protective, and can be removed once you see buds around the 2 week mark.

Container Roses

These flowers can be planted in the early summer or the late spring. You want to be sure all frosts around your mobile home are finished before cultivating.

  1. Dig a hole – This time, the hole will need to be twice as wide as the container, and at least as deep.
  1. Remove the flowers – Taking the container off of the roses is easier when the soil isn’t as moist.
  1. Loosen the root ball – We recommend using your hands and gently coaxing the dirt away from the roots.
  1. Put the rose in the hole – This is as easy as setting the whole thing down and filling the rest of the hole in with potting soil. Make sure you take care not to leave any air pockets around the roots.
  1. Water – At this point, you are ready to water your roses! Just like the root roses, water them twice and give the plant time to drain in the middle.
